Mark of the Devil

Austria, 1700. Terrible times of superstition and religious persecutions. The "witch hunters": cruel and ruthless. The grand master inquisitor arrives to an Austrian city to prepare incredible trials that will end in terrible torture for the unfortunate people, who in the eyes of the inquisitors have conjured the powers of darkness or, in the case of women, have fornicated with the devil.

With introduction and conversation with the public by Cristian Planas. Essential work, very unknown to the general public, by one of the great masters of horror. We will screen the full version, which includes many of the scenes cut at the time of its release. A film that time feels wonderful to him and that will surprise many because of the topicality and boldness of the subject it deals with. A housewife is introduced to the world of the satanic arts by signing up for a neighborhood women's association dedicated to black magic. After having an affair with her teenage daughter's lover, a demonic creature begins to sexually harass her.

During the Middle Ages, the Russian Inquisition condemns a couple of lovers who practice witchcraft to death and executes them by putting a mask with spikes inside. Centuries later, their coffins are found and opened by two travelers. By removing the masks from the corpses, the witches come back to life and spread panic among the local inhabitants.

Film by Tigon, Hammer's great rival, with a cast of mythical horror faces, where a dark mansion and mysterious creatures serve the director to delve fully into the genre. When his brother disappears, Robert Manning pays a visit to the remote country house where he was last heard from. Although his host is welcoming, and his niece more than welcoming, Manning detects a sense of menace in the air: the legend of Lavinia Morley, Black Witch of Greymarsh, covers it all.

An adaptation of the story The Viyi, by Nikolai Gogol, for many years it was the only horror film of Soviet production. Recently recovered in a magnificent high-definition restoration, it is a cult classic of the genre. During a vacation period, a group of young priests are deceived by a witch. One of these young priests is called days later to a small village to fulfill a mission, to save the soul of a young woman. To fulfill his mandate, he must pray in a small church next to the young woman's corpse for 3 nights. Everything will change when he discovers that the young woman is, in reality, the witch he found with her companions.
